Recently, it has become fashionable to lose weight with the help of intermittent fasting. With this diet, meals alternate with periods of abstinence strictly at a certain time. In fact, this is just one of the diets, just pretty tough. So, it can have quite unpleasant consequences. Endocrinologist, nutritionist of the network of reproduction and genetics centers “Nova Clinic” Tatyana Golitsyna explained how fasting can undermine the health of a person who is losing weight.
Golitsyna noted that all major studies on the safety and effectiveness of intermittent fasting have so far been carried out only on animals. What really happens to people there is still not really clear.
But it is known that with such a diet, the body begins to lack useful substances, the endocrinologist said. According to her, long breaks between meals can lead to fainting and gallstone disease and hypoglycemia. The last ailment is a too strong decrease in the concentration of sugar in the blood. Even a person can exacerbate chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
Intermittent fasting can also disrupt hormonal balance, the doctor warned. This will lead to problems with sleep, a person will begin to feel worse in general, and will not be able to work normally.
If, nevertheless, you decide to starve like this, it is better to first consult an endocrinologist. The diet is definitely contraindicated in pregnancy, low blood pressure and endocrine diseases.
Earlier, doctor Elena Paretskaya warned that malnutrition increases the risk of developing cancer.
