Crimean farmers have started pruning fruit trees. This was announced by the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Crimea Andrei Savchuk. In 2023, such garden work is planned to be carried out on an area of about 10,000 hectares, which is almost 1,000 hectares more than last year.
“This year, the area on which it is planned to carry out pruning has increased due to the fact that young trees have entered the fruiting phase. In total, about 65% of the garden areas in the republic are occupied by apple trees, more than 26% by stone fruits – peach, cherry, plum and cherry plum. Usually, pruning begins in February, but favorable weather conditions on the peninsula allow such work to be carried out in January. Now pruning has been carried out on an area of just over 900 hectares, which is 9% of the planned one,” commented Andriy Savchuk.
The head of the Crimean Ministry of Agriculture said that the largest areas that are subject to pruning, and this is more than 1800 hectares each, are located in the Bakhchisarai and Krasnogvardeisky districts. A slightly smaller area needs to be cut in Nizhnegorsky – 1200 hectares, Belogorsky and Chernomorsky 1000 hectares each, as well as Kirovsky and Simferopol regions 800 hectares each.
“Such garden work is part of the basic care of fruit trees, they allow you to actively and quickly regulate the growth, productivity, longevity, winter hardiness of the garden, as well as product quality. Young trees are helped to form a strong compact crown that can withstand a large harvest,” added the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Crimea.
