From January 1 to January 22, the Russian Federation shipped 2.473 million tons of wheat for export, which is almost two times more than in the same period last year (1.253 million tons), follows from the monitoring of the Russian Grain Union, Interfax reports.
According to the director of the analytical department of the union Elena Tyurina, the share of wheat in total grain exports increased to 88% from 75% over the same period last year. In total, 2.8 million tons of grain were shipped, which is almost 1.7 times more than a year earlier.
“Given the high demand for Russian wheat, its exports in January can be estimated at 3.5 million tons. In January last year, 1.765 million tons were shipped,” she said. – This is quite high, but not the maximum figure. The maximum was in January 2021, when wheat exports amounted to 4.2 million tons. The average for January is 2.3 million tons.”
According to Tyurina, shipments to Egypt since the beginning of January increased by 92% and amounted to 638 thousand tons, to Turkey – by 88%, to 406 thousand tons. “200 thousand tons were sent to Pakistan, although a year ago there was no such direction in Russian grain exports,” she said. “Then comes Algeria, where 121 thousand tons were shipped, which is almost four times more than at the beginning of January last year.”
“In general, we can say that there is a very active growth in supplies to African countries, in particular, to Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Senegal. Brazil and Cuba appeared among buyers from other continents, which has not happened for a long time, ”the expert noted.
According to her, since the beginning of the year, 23 companies have exported wheat against 39 a year ago. The main volumes were shipped through the port of Novorossiysk – more than 1.1 million tons, which is 56% more than in January last year. Offshore transshipment has tripled to 500,000 tons. “Shipments through Taman increased by 2.5 times, to 150 thousand tons, through Rostov-on-Don and Azov more than doubled. In total, transshipment went through 11 ports,” Tyurina said.
