Specialists of the branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Rosselkhozcenter” in the Stavropol Territory conduct constant monitoring of polyphagous pests. In 2022, a high number of gregarious locusts was noted in the Stavropol Territory. On average, for five years against locusts, extermination measures were carried out on an area of 140.7 thousand hectares. In 2022, treatments against locust pests were carried out on an area of 72.54 thousand hectares.
Locusts, as mass crop pests, are a serious threat to agriculture. Mass pests require constant monitoring and timely protective measures. The slightest weakening of the fight against locusts leads to a rapid increase in their numbers and, as a result, to mass reproduction.
Under favorable weather conditions, a wide spread of locust pests is predicted in 2023. The total harmfulness of locust pests this year in the Stavropol Territory is predicted on a total area of at least 100 thousand hectares, taking into account flights from other territories.
In the autumn, surveys were carried out on the wintering stock of locust egg-pods on an area of 46.2 thousand hectares. Settlement was revealed on an area of 13.5 thousand hectares, with an average number of 0.7 egg-pods/m2.
Spring control surveys are planned on an area of 30 thousand hectares in order to determine the conditions for overwintering and adjust the treatment plan. Surveys on locust pests are planned in 2023 on an area of 900 thousand hectares: for larvae – 700 thousand hectares, for adults – 200 thousand hectares. In adjacent territories 38 thousand hectares, including: with the Republic of Kalmykia – 15 thousand hectares, with the Republic of Dagestan – 18 thousand hectares.
