The State Duma adopted a law establishing the possibility of special processing of agricultural and food products using ionizing radiation. The corresponding decision was made at the plenary meeting on March 2.
According to the initiative, agricultural and food products, food raw materials, drinking water and materials and products that come into contact with them during production, storage, transportation and sale must meet the mandatory requirements for ensuring radiation safety established by the law of the Eurasian Economic Union, and in their absence – by legislation Russian Federation, and are subject to production control.
According to Vladimir Kashin, chairman of the Committee on Agrarian Issues, the document has received all the necessary approvals.
The law also clarifies the rules for registering a pesticide or agrochemical, providing that substances registered in accordance with the law are included in the State Catalog of Pesticides and Agrochemicals permitted for use in Russia. The register will be maintained by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Sergei Lisovsky, a member of the State Duma Committee on Agrarian Affairs, specified that now the authorities will be able to revoke licenses issued to pesticide manufacturers, as well as those who sell them, if they do not provide samples and methods for detecting chemicals.
“We need to move on, the European Union has passed a law that by 2027 they will halve the use of pesticides per hectare of arable land. We need to move in the same direction, this will help preserve the health of our nation and children,” the deputy stressed.
He also said that in many countries the use of more than 40 types of pesticides, which are still used in the Russian Federation, is prohibited. He recommended that the Government of the Russian Federation respond more quickly and efficiently to the challenges facing agriculture.
