Masaaki Yuasa is one of the best Japanese animators who knows how to create films for children and adults. His musical “Inu-o: Birth of a Legend” (March 2) based on a historical novel: in the 14th century, a blind musician and an invalid form a folk-rock band and quickly gain popularity with the commoners, which annoys the subjects of the shogun’s court. The film premiered in the Horizons program of the Venice Film Festival.

“My Sun” (March 16) showed in the parallel program “Week of Critics” of the Cannes Film Festival, which is not very popular with the professional public. Nevertheless, the debut work of Charlotte Wells became a worldwide hit and traveled all over the continents, and the lead actor Paul Mescal received an Oscar nomination. Wells filmed a delicate and disturbing film of a father and daughter vacationing in a typical Turkish resort.

In 2022, Frenchwoman Claire Denis released two award-winning feature films: With Love and Fury won the Best Director award in Berlin, and “Stars at Noon” (March 23) – Grand Prix in Cannes. Stars at Noon tells the story of journalist Trish, who is stuck in Nicaragua without money or support from her superiors. In a hopeless situation, she finds a savior – the mysterious Briton Daniel.
Blockbusters
A rare case when an A-class blockbuster reached the Russian box office. The plot of the fourth, final part of the franchise John Wick 4 (March 23) smoothly follows from the finale of the previous one: the hero of Keanu Reeves found a way to get to the criminal organization “High Table”, which keeps all professional killers in the “underworld”. Project director Chad Stahelski promised that, no matter how close the hero is to liberation, he will still have to suffer for the sake of freedom.

Russian cinema
Two films by Yakut directors will be shown to the audience in December. For thriller lovers “Detector” (March 2) Costas Marsan. Former operative Victoria left the service for the sake of a normal life with her husband Roman. After the attack of the criminal, the woman can no longer have children, so the couple take little Dasha from the shelter, whose parents died in a fire. The girl’s strange behavior reminds Victoria of a cold case. The main roles were played by Ekaterina Vilkova and Kirill Kyaro.

“Aita” (March 30) shot by one of the leaders of modern Yakut cinema Stepan Burnashev, who has a fine sense of the structure of rural society. After a note with the name of the police officer Afoni is found in the pocket of the schoolgirl Aita, the whole village takes up arms against him. The man drove her home, but, according to him, did nothing wrong with the child; nevertheless, after their meeting, Aita attempted suicide.

The lead actor in “The Good Man” Nikita Efremov turned into “Healthy Man” (March 2). One night, Yegor woke up from heart-rending screams in the courtyard of the house, he protected the stranger from beating, but could not save her life – in the morning she jumped out of the window. After the tragic events, the man completely changes, decides to devote himself to helping other people. He gets a job as a volunteer in a children’s oncology center, searches for the missing, falls in love with a girl, forgetting about the main work of a sports news anchor and his wife. “Healthy Man” received the main prize of the MIFF film festival in the Russian film competition.

The best of the past
There were no new names in the horror industry for a long time, until Ari Aster gave fans of the genre first Reincarnation, and then “Solstice” (March 8). The heroine Florence Pugh is having a hard time with the suicide of her parents and sister. Relations with her boyfriend come to a standstill, but she gives herself and her lover one last chance by agreeing to a friend’s offer to visit a Swedish community in which the traditions of their ancestors are strictly observed.

At the end of March, a mini-retrospective of one of the leaders of the French new wave, Francois Truffaut, will take place. Will show “Four Hundred Blows” (March 23) And “Jules and Jim” (March 30). The first film is a senseless riot of youth, the story of a schoolboy who runs away from home; the second is a romantic drama about a love triangle, where two friends fight for the heart of a girl who embodies their ideals of intelligence and beauty for many years.

“The King and the Fool” (February 2) is a biopic about a Russian punk rock band, which not only tells about the formation of the band, but also shows a fantasy world in which Gorshok and Knyaz are trying to save the princess from the hands of a villain.
