The largest Egyptian pyramid in the world is the Pyramid of Cheops, which reaches a height of 140 meters. According to scientists, it was built from millions of blocks of limestone – it took the builders more than 20 years to build a huge structure. The Pyramid of Cheops is also notable for being the only “Seven Wonders of the World” that has survived to this day. It is very well explored, but still fraught with many secrets – for several years, scientists suspected that there was a secret chamber inside it. Recently it turned out that this is indeed the case, and this chamber is more capacious than originally thought. Scientists were able to photograph the mysterious cavity and are currently trying to understand what it was used for.

The fact that there is a secret chamber inside the pyramid of Cheops, scientists began to guess in 2016. The scientific equipment made it clear to them that there was a hollow section above the main entrance to the Egyptian tomb. What size and depth it had, no one knew, because the discovery was made solely by calculations. But recently, specialists from the Technical University of Munich used an endoscope and were able to take a photo of a hidden chamber without resorting to destroying the wall.
The pyramids are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means that we must be especially careful when conducting investigations so as not to damage anything. We are working on studying the pyramid of Cheops with devices that can be used without destroying the walls, and sometimes even without contact, the authors of the new archaeological discovery shared.

To photograph the previously unknown inner cavity of the Cheops pyramid, scientists found a small hole between the limestone stones. A small tube was placed in it, through which it was subsequently possible to pass the lens of the endoscopic camera into the mysterious cavity. It turned out that the secret cavity of the Cheops pyramid is much larger than previously thought – scientists believe that a couple of people can fit in it.
Finding a hollow space in a pyramid is already something special. But the fact that this chamber is large enough to accommodate several people makes the discovery even more important, said study leader Christian Grosse.

The chamber inside the Cheops pyramid was larger than expected
Initially, scientists believed that the cavity inside the pyramid of Cheops is something like a corridor about 5 meters long. However, the results of a new study suggest that the dimensions of the chamber are several times greater than this length. Judging by the photo, there is not a single sign of human activity inside the chamber. The research team assumes that no one has been inside for 4,500 years, that is, from the day the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza was completed.

There is nothing inside the secret chamber. However, archaeologists are now wondering what might lie behind the back wall of this small room. Scientists will be looking for an answer to this question in the near future. This discovery once again showed that the Egyptian pyramids can still be studied and learn something new about them.
