Governor of Kuban Veniamin Kondratiev told reporters about this.
– A program for genomic selection of dairy cattle has been launched in the region. The project is being implemented jointly with the National Intellectual Development Foundation, the Kurchatov Institute and the Kuban Agrarian University. It is designed for six years. The main stages were developed according to the principles of the best world practices. They allow you to determine the productivity of the animal already at birth and conduct targeted work with high-quality livestock. This will help create our own highly productive gene pool of breeds, achieve the indicators of the Development Strategy of the Krasnodar Territory – to produce 2.1 million tons of milk annually by 2030, – said Veniamin Kondratiev.
By the beginning of 2023, 30 farms in the region organized the collection and processing of data on the breeding stock by phenotype – this is an assessment of individual development, constitution and productivity. Of the 90 thousand animals, 15 thousand were selected, which are of interest for subsequent selection. Biomaterial was taken from them, DNA was isolated and genotyping was performed. Based on these data, schemes were developed for calculating the basic indices of breeding value and productivity.
The Governor of Kuban noted that in 2023, similar work will be carried out on another 15,000 animals.
Within the framework of the project, a consortium was formed headed by the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”. It included: “Kuban State Agrarian University named after I.I. I.T. Trubilin, LLC Miratorg Genetika, LLC Innagro. A project office was formed on the basis of KubGAU.
