Approximately one in two adults has dandruff, and it is more common in men. This problem appears for various reasons – for someone because of heredity, for someone because of a bad environment. Some people just don’t take care of themselves. And most importantly, it is impossible to completely get rid of the “ashes of the burning mind”. But still, there are ways to help remove dandruff from your hair. Dermatologist and trichologist Olga Saperova spoke about them.
What causes dandruff
The layers of the scalp are constantly flaking off and replacing each other. Normally, this process takes a month, so it goes unnoticed. But for some, flaking occurs every seven days, so the flakes of skin on the hair become visible to the naked eye. They are called dandruff.
Doctor Saperova, in an interview with Gazeta.ru, listed three main causes of dandruff. The specialist referred to them:
- disruption of the sebaceous glands;
- the appearance of waste products of fungal microorganisms on the scalp;
- individual susceptibility (genetic predisposition).
According to a dermatologist, anyone can develop dandruff. For example, in winter, heating is actively working in the premises, the air becomes dry, and this is reflected in the condition of the scalp. Even in the cold, people are forced to wear hats on the street, which can also be called the cause of dandruff.
How to remove dandruff from hair and what are the remedies
Saperova immediately emphasized that there was no cure for dandruff. That is, there is no remedy that could completely solve this problem.
“But antifungal creams and shampoos containing ketoconazole or salicylic acid can improve the condition of the scalp,” the doctor said.
According to the physician, some shampoos and creams may contain coal tar. It slows down the growth of skin cells and thus reduces the amount of dandruff.
What is seborrhea?
Sometimes dandruff affects not only the scalp, but also the area of the eyebrows and nose. This is called seborrheic dermatitis or simply seborrhea. It is accompanied by inflammation.
The doctor advised to consult a specialist in case of dandruff and seborrhea. The doctor will help you choose the right therapy. By the way, sometimes itching can indicate skin ailments. Earlier, dermatologist Dmitry Vetlitsky explained what to do if the head itches. Spoiler: you can’t scratch.
