Growing in Southeast Asia, durian has a pungent odor and delicate taste. The reason for the stench is considered to be a high concentration of sulfur in the fruit, which is oxidized upon contact with air.
The Turkish airliner took off at 15:35 but returned to the airport of departure an hour and ten minutes later.
“The flight <...> received a warning from sensors in the cargo hold during the flight. After the crew noticed the smell, the captain-pilot of the aircraft decided to return to Istanbul airport,” the TV channel said.
The liner returned to Istanbul in normal mode, where, after inspecting the cargo, it turned out that durian was the cause of the sensors.
Passengers were sent to Barcelona on another flight.
