It was the final European Championship for Russia
Russian chess player Alexei Sarana won the European Championship. The tournament was held in the Serbian city of Vrnjacka Banya.
484 people participated in the European Chess Championship. 23-year-old Sarana scored 8.5 points out of 11. Romanian representative Kirill Shevchenko and an athlete from Belgium Daniel Darda earned the same amount. They took second and third place respectively in the additional indicators.

The 23 best participants of the European Championship will compete in the 2023 International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Cup, which will be held in late summer in Baku. In addition to Sarana, Russian chess players Andrey Esipenko and David Paravyan will go there.
The European Championship in Serbia was the last for Russia, the athletes competed under the flag of FIDE. From 2024, the Russians will participate in the Asian Championship.
