Vorkuta is the third largest city in the Komi Republic and the easternmost in Europe. The city is located beyond the Arctic Circle, the distance to Moscow is about 1900 km. The life of Vorkuta is closely connected with coal mining and depends on the work of mining enterprises. More precisely, from one enterprise – Vorkutaugol. During the mining crisis of the 90s, many mines were closed, other enterprises of the city also stopped – and almost half of the population left Vorkuta. As a result, there are many abandoned houses and even entire neighboring villages without inhabitants.
