Now Kazakhstan is holding extraordinary elections of deputies to the Majilis (the lower house of the country’s parliament) and local representatives of governments at all levels. The first president of Kazakhstan, who resigned from all posts in 2022 amid protests, voted at a polling station in the capital’s Astana Opera Theater. Local media circulated a video in which he looks quite cheerful.
On January 20, 2023, it became known that Nazarbayev was hospitalized in one of the hospitals in Astana due to heart problems. Later, the politician’s press service reported that the first president of Kazakhstan underwent surgery.
The National Scientific Cardiac Surgery Center explained that the procedure was planned back in 2022. Nazarbayev was discharged from the hospital on January 23, after which he has not appeared in public until today.
