This Friday, May 19, a phenomenon will occur that you will not see with your own eyes. There comes a mysterious phase of the moon, when it is completely hidden from us. This time, the Moon is on the day side, which makes Friday’s new moon a special and rare occurrence. This season it is an additional new moon and is comparable to the so-called Blue Moon.

Astronomical cycles do not always coincide perfectly. The moon makes a complete revolution around the Earth about 12.37 times a year, which is why we have a full moon and a new moon every month. However, due to such small discrepancies, we get additional phases. It is these phases, outside the astronomical sphere, that are called the Black and Blue Moons. They come about every two or three years. More precisely, it occurs seven times within 235 new moons, which fall approximately 19 years apart. This cycle is called Metonic and is the basis for many lunar calendars.
The term “Black Moon” appeared relatively recently, in the last decade, and is associated with Wicca and astrological teachings. There is no clear definition for the Black Moon. In Farmer’s Almanac, the Black Moon is referred to as the mirror version of the Blue Moon and represents the third new moon of the season. This Friday we will witness exactly this type of Black Moon, which occurs approximately once every 33 months.
It is also worth noting that the Moon itself does not change its color. It doesn’t turn blue or black. However, the new moon creates favorable conditions for observing the sky. At this time, the night sky is not illuminated by the bright light of the full moon, which creates ideal conditions for astronomy lovers. The absence of light pollution allows you to see the stars and planets in all their glory.
So, despite the fact that we will not be able to physically see this spectacle on Friday, enjoy the moment, feeling the invisible presence of the Black Moon. Think about what secrets and mysteries our space neighbor keeps. It is also a great opportunity to look at the world around us from a new perspective and reflect on the place of humanity in the universe.
So take a break, step away from the light of city lights and take yourself a little excursion into the world of stars and planets. May the invisible Black Moon remind us of the infinite majesty of the universe and our humble role in this great theater of the cosmos.
